Bursitis
Both bursitis and tendinitis involve inflammation of the soft tissue surrounding bones and muscles. It happens frequently in shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and ankles. There are many bursae in the body, each filled with fluid to cushion or lubricate soft tissue overlying bones. When they become inflamed (increased fluid and/or surface redness), it can painfully affect skin, tendons, and muscles.
Causes
Trauma is one main cause of bursitis. Trauma can either be a single event occurrence (acute) or it can occur over a longer period of time (chronic). Overuse is another cause of bursitis. Infections can cause bursitis, known as septic bursitis. 85% of septic bursitis happens in men. Rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions, such as gout or pseudogout, can also cause bursitis.
Bursitis Symptoms
There will be pain, swelling, and tenderness in the affected area. This can make it hard for you to walk or use the limb regularly. Most commonly, bursitis occurs in the shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip.
